Tet 2024 in Hoi An: Immersive Traditions, Vibrant Celebrations

Tet 2024 in Hoi An Vietnam

Celebrating Tet in Vietnam was an unforgettable journey into the heart of Vietnamese culture and traditions. Tet, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, is a time of renewal, family, and vibrant festivities that far surpass the New Year celebrations I was accustomed to.

The lead-up to Tet involved a thorough cleaning of homes, a tradition I found particularly meaningful. This wasn’t just a spring clean; it was a symbolic gesture of clearing out the old to make way for the new, imbued with a sense of purpose and renewal. The transformation of the environment with colourful flowers and plants, especially the bright orange kumquat trees, added a festive flair to the atmosphere.

Family lies at the core of Tet celebrations. Witnessing the exodus of people heading to their ancestral homes to reunite with their families and honour their ancestors was deeply moving. This tradition of paying respects at the gravesites of deceased relatives was a poignant reminder of the importance of family and heritage in Vietnamese culture.

Tet in Hoi An Vietnam - 3 The first day of Tet, dedicated to family, was an intimate and touching affair. The exchange of “Lucky Money” from elders to the younger ones symbolized the passing of fortune and blessings, a tradition that resonated with me for its warmth and sincerity. The belief surrounding the first visitor of the year added an intriguing element of fate and luck to the New Year’s proceedings.

Choosing to spend Tet in Hoi An, after being in Da Nang, was a decision driven by my desire for a more traditional experience. The hospitality and warmth I received at Senda Villas, where I stayed, made me feel like part of a family. The New Year’s Eve celebration there, filled with laughter, music, and shared stories, was a testament to the universal language of human connection.

Post-Tet Hoi An was a blend of enchantment and overwhelming activity. The town, buzzing with festive energy and crowded with visitors, offered a lively yet chaotic glimpse into the heart of Tet celebrations. Despite the hustle, the spirit of the New Year, with its endless greetings and communal joy, was infectious.

Tet in Hoi An Vietnam - 2 Delving deeper into the cultural fabric of Vietnam, I participated in a coffee-making class. This experience was not just about learning the art of Vietnamese coffee but also about understanding its social significance. The class was a fun and insightful foray into a cherished Vietnamese tradition.

The Hoi An Memories show, however, was a highlight that left an indelible mark on my Tet experience. This grand spectacle was more than just entertainment; it was a journey through time. With over 500 performers bringing 400 years of Hoi An’s history to life on an expansive outdoor stage, the show was a mesmerizing blend of artistry, history, and culture. It started with the depiction of Hoi An as a simple farming village, evolving through eras of trade and cultural exchanges, showcasing the impact of foreign merchants and the transformation of Hoi An into a bustling trading port.

The attention to detail in portraying daily life and significant historical milestones was breathtaking. The absence of dialogue made the performance universally accessible, with the city’s evolution and the passage of time narrated through stunning visual storytelling. This show not only entertained me but also educated and connected me more deeply with the historical essence of Hoi An.

During my visit to An Bang, I stumbled upon Zon Tailor, a delightful alternative to the bustling and somewhat overwhelming tailor shops of Hoi An. The warm welcome I received at Zon Tailor, complete with refreshing cold water and a sincere offer of assistance, was just the beginning of a wonderful experience. Being on the larger side, I typically feel uneasy about getting clothes made to measure, but the tailor at Zon immediately alleviated my concerns with her empathetic and accommodating demeanour. After a thorough measurement session and a detailed discussion about my style preferences, I confidently placed an order for three shirts, a special silk blouse, and black linen pants. My husband, too, opted for a custom-made dress shirt and pants. Remarkably, all our garments were ready within 30 hours,

My Tet adventure in Vietnam, from the lively streets of Da Nang to the historic charm of Hoi An and the tranquil beaches of An Bang, was a journey through the vibrant heart of Vietnamese culture. It was an experience filled with contrasts, from festive chaos to reflective moments, all of which deepened my appreciation for the rich tapestry of traditions and the warm spirit of the Vietnamese people.
