Western Australia for Over 50s: Coastal Drives & Secret Cafés
Slow travel gems from Sheridan-Leigh, designed for those who savour the journey, not just the destination.
If you’re over 50 and love a good view, a relaxed pace, and a flat white with character, Western Australia is calling your name. This isn’t about ticking off sights at lightning speed it’s about winding coastal drives, fresh sea air, and secret cafés tucked into unexpected corners.
Sheridan-Leigh shares her favourite WA coastal spots where the journey is just as special as the stopovers.
The Joy of Driving WA’s Coastline
One of the greatest pleasures of Western Australia is that the roads aren’t rushed. You can breathe here. Pull over whenever the ocean catches your eye which will be often.
Here are three of my favourite slow coastal drives:
1. Perth to Yanchep via Indian Ocean Drive
- Stop at Burns Beach Café coastal views and house-made muffins
- Enjoy the Mindarie Marina boardwalk
- Detour into Yanchep National Park for a walk and spot a koala or two
2. Mandurah to Bunbury
- Pop into Falcon Bay for a beachside breather
- Detour to Lake Clifton Thrombolites ancient living fossils
- Coffee at Bunbury’s Townhouse Café courtyard bliss
3. Margaret River Region Loop
- Wineries, chocolate stops, and scenic coastlines
- Try White Elephant Café in Gnarabup for a coffee with uninterrupted ocean views
- Detour to Hamelin Bay to see stingrays at your feet
Each route offers a little bit of everything: coastal air, easy walks, and charming places to sit, sip, and just be.
Secret Cafés Worth Discovering
Forget the big-name franchises these are the local favourites where the atmosphere is calm and the coffee is made with care.
- Moore & Moore (Fremantle) Art gallery meets café, beautiful courtyard, and easy vibes
- Yahava KoffeeWorks (Margaret River) Sample different blends, great for coffee lovers
- The Crooked Carrot (Myalup) Quirky, colourful, and surrounded by nature
- Little Bay (Watermans Bay) Coastal breakfast with ocean breezes
- The Berry Farm (Rosa Glen) Homemade jams, peaceful gardens, and scones that might change your life
Each café has its own character and is ideal for slow, easy mornings or a relaxed afternoon pick-me-up.
Tips for Over 50s Travelling WA
- Take your time WA is about wide-open spaces, not speed limits
- Stay in boutique stays or peaceful Airbnb’s there’s a lot more charm outside the big hotels
- Travel with a thermos and picnic rug some of the best views don’t come with cafés attached
- Visit during shoulder seasons late autumn or early spring has mild weather and fewer crowds
- Join local tours when you want to go deeper Indigenous guides, walking food tours, or whale watching add depth without the rush
Why WA is Perfect for Slow Travel Over 50
There’s a stillness to the West Coast. The kind that lets you exhale. Whether you’re watching pelicans glide across an estuary or sipping tea by the sea, there’s time to enjoy it all without feeling hurried.
WA isn’t just a destination. It’s a gentle reminder that slowing down is a luxury in itself. So take the drive, stop often, sip slowly, and rediscover the joy of travel without the rush.
