Missing Home While Living the Dream:
The Emotional Cost of Constant Travel
I’m usually someone who sees the bright side of things. Blessed with a lifestyle many can only dream of, I cherish the ability to wander the globe freely, experiencing its myriad cultures and landscapes. This privilege, which I hold close, allows me to wake each morning with a sense of adventure awaiting me at my doorstep. I feel lucky to live where I can travel and see the world.
However, today, I find myself pausing for a moment of reflection. While my journeys bring immense joy, they also carry a weight, a set of challenges that occasionally press down on my spirits.
Even with all the amazing things about travelling, some downsides get to me sometimes. Friends mean a lot to me—they keep me grounded and give me the support I need. My true friends—the ones who are always there with a like on a post or send the right message at just the right time—mean so much, even if it’s just a quick chat or video call.
But it’s tough not having them here to grab a coffee or a drink with. It’s not that easy to make new friends who stick around. Sometimes, the people I meet are just passing through or expats who might be having a tough time and drinking too much. I haven’t found that friend I’m looking for yet. Sure, my husband is my best friend, but sometimes I get tired of it being just us all the time.
In this nomadic life, there’s also a profound sense of unrootedness. The notion of ‘home’ becomes elusive when you no longer have a permanent address or the comforting familiarity of personal belongings. Even my beloved dog, Loki, had to be rehomed. Though he is happy and well-cared for, the ache of his absence is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made for this lifestyle.
Sitting here in Da Nang in this nice coffee shop, sipping a great cappuccino and listening to soothing music, you might wonder what I have to complain about. And you’d have a point.
Yet, it is essential to acknowledge that even the most picturesque paths have their thorns. It’s in moments like these that I allow myself to feel the full spectrum of my emotions without judgment. It’s okay to yearn for the familiar, to miss the comforting circle of longstanding friendships, and to feel adrift in the vast ocean of the world.
But it is also in these moments of vulnerability that I find a deeper appreciation for my journey. Each experience, each challenge, is a thread in the rich tapestry of my life. They teach resilience, foster a greater understanding of myself, and push me to forge connections in ways I never anticipated.
Despite the challenges, I am reminded of the unique stories each day brings, stories that are mine to tell and cherish. The beauty of this lifestyle is not just in the places I see or the surface-level interactions but in the profound personal growth that each new day offers.
As I navigate through these ups and downs, I often find unexpected joys and learnings. Each new city or village brings a new perspective, and a new friend, even if just for a day. These moments, fleeting as they may be, are gems in the ongoing journey of my life.
The connections I make, the smiles I share with strangers, and the new foods I try—all these experiences enrich my life in ways that go beyond the traditional sense of stability and belonging. They teach me about diversity, resilience, and the universal human experience.
So, while today might be tinged with a shade of melancholy, I am reassured by the knowledge that tomorrow holds the promise of new connections, and new experiences. In this ever-changing life, I remain committed to finding joy in every sunrise, and comfort in the knowledge that home isn’t just a place, but a state of being, one that I carry with me, wherever I go.
