Da Nang Vietnam 50th Anniversary of Liberation
I have lived in Da Nang, Vietnam, for over a year. This coastal city has been my home except for the occasional visa run. And what a home it has become.
There’s something beautifully unspoken in the way Da Nang wraps its arms around you. It’s more than the warm smiles or the friendly waves from strangers. It’s the deep, unwavering pride in their city and country. A pride that becomes contagious the longer you stay. As a guest here, I remain aware of my place, and I carry a deep respect for the people who have welcomed me into their world with such open-hearted generosity.
Beyond the stunning coastline and the serene gaze of the majestic Lady Buddha, Da Nang pulses with energy and soul. It’s a city that has rebuilt itself with grace, determination, and community spirit. And never is that more evident than during a celebration like this past weekend, the 50th anniversary of Da Nang’s liberation.
This golden jubilee was more than just a date in history. It was a vivid, city-wide expression of joy, remembrance, and cultural pride. On March 29th, 1975, Da Nang was liberated during the final stages of the Vietnam War, a moment that marked a turning point in the reunification of the country. Fifty years later, the city didn’t just remember. It danced, it sang, it told stories, and it welcomed the world to celebrate.
I want to take you through this unforgettable weekend not just through the events, but through the spirit that made them come alive.
Da Nang Food Tour Festival
My weekend began, as many good Vietnamese weekends do, with food. Just minutes from my apartment, the Da Nang Food Tour Festival transformed the streets into a haven of aromas, laughter, and colour. Over 100 food stalls stretched along the foreshore, each offering a slice of local flavour from co-op specialities to traditional favourites.
More than 200 dishes were available, and I tried more than a few. It wasn’t just the food that warmed my heart, though it was the people. Proud vendors eager to share their craft. Families strolling hand-in-hand. Strangers sharing tables and stories. The joy was palpable.
The next evening, I headed towards the iconic Dragon Bridge for something called “Floats and Boats “, and what a visual treat it was. A convoy of decorated vehicles crossed the bridge in a festive procession, followed by a parade of glowing boats drifting along the Han River. The water shimmered with reflections of coloured lights, each boat a celebration of Da Nang’s enduring beauty and pride. As I stood among the crowd, surrounded by cheers and camera flashes, I felt a wave of gratitude. This wasn’t just a show. This was a statement: “We are proud. We are united. We remember.
Grand Expo of 50 Years Development
And just when I thought the weekend couldn’t possibly get better, Sunday arrived. I made my way to the Tien Son Sports Centre, which was hosting the grand Expo of 50 Years of Development and Integration. What a sight. Military vehicles, coast guard boats, fire trucks, tanks, and bomb disposal units gleamed under the sunshine. Inside the marquees, the journey of Da Nang unfolded through 3D mapping, interactive history displays, cultural exhibits, and business showcases. It was an immersive, informative, and emotional walk through a city’s transformation. From its war-torn past to its thriving, innovative present, Da Nang laid out its story with pride and passion.
Later that day, I stepped inside the newly inaugurated Da Nang Museum. Set within a beautifully restored 125-year-old French colonial building, once the city hall it felt like stepping into a love letter to the city itself. Nearly 3,000 artefacts, documents, and displays told the stories of resilience, creativity, and evolution. Each corner was thoughtfully curated to connect visitors with the heart of Da Nang. From historical film projections to modern-day cultural exhibits, the museum was a beautiful blend of the past and future.
But the magic didn’t stop there. The city came alive with artistic performances, none more moving than “The Party in the Spring of Great Victory.” It was more than just a concert it was theatre, music, dance, and storytelling all woven together to honour the Vietnamese people’s bravery during their resistance. I looked around and saw locals of all ages, some with tears in their eyes, others waving flags, all caught up in the emotion of the moment.
Throughout the city, neighbourhoods joined in with local festivals. Streets were lined with flags and flowers, parks hosted games and sports, and families gathered in every corner to celebrate together. These were not just official events, they were heartfelt gestures from a community that wanted to honour its roots and share its joy.
And the most incredible part of all. It was free. Every exhibit, every performance, every celebration was open to the public. No tickets. No reserved sections. Just a city united in celebration. In many places around the world, patriotism can feel performative. But here in Da Nang, it felt natural, sincere, and deeply human. Their love for their country is not wrapped in nationalism but in gratitude and community.
It’s hard to describe just how special that felt.
As I walked home on Sunday night, tired but elated, I reflected on how this weekend had touched me. As an Australian, I come from a country that also values freedom, multiculturalism, and community. But I’ve never quite felt patriotism expressed with such unity, warmth, and generosity. Here in Da Nang, it’s not about loud declarations. It’s about quietly living your pride every day, and now and then, letting it burst forth in colour and celebration.
Will there be another event like this next year? Maybe not. But it doesn’t matter. Because in Da Nang, there is always something happening, always something to celebrate. From the upcoming International Fireworks Competition in May to summer nights filled with drone shows, hot air balloon displays, and community markets, this city knows how to live in the moment and honour its journey.
Da Nang isn’t just a city I live in. It’s a city I’ve come to love. And after a weekend like this, I feel that love even more deeply.
To those of you who dream of slow travel, meaningful moments, and cultural connection, Da Nang is calling. And trust me, she has a warm smile waiting for you.
