Siem Reap Tuk-Tuk Driver
Slow travel, true connection, and one unforgettable man in Cambodia
A Cambodia Ride I’ll Never Forget
I didn’t expect a tuk-tuk ride to leave such a mark on my heart.
But travel can surprise you, especially when you slow down enough to see the people behind the places.
It’s been just over two years since I left my management job and started living life on my terms. Since then, slow travel has become more than a way to explore, it’s become a way to connect. From the islands of the South Pacific to the dusty roads of Southeast Asia, the real stories that stay with me are always about people.
And last week in Cambodia, I met someone I’ll never forget.
Meeting Cham Roeun Tuk-Tuk Driver
His name was Cham.
We were given his number late one evening by someone who said, “He’s one of the good ones.” That was all we needed to hear.
Without much notice, we messaged to ask if he could take us to the Angkor Wat temples for sunrise. He replied almost instantly with a cheerful “Yes, I will be there!” And sure enough, at 4.30am, there he was waiting out the front of our hotel, tuk tuk polished, eyes bright, and wearing the biggest, most genuine smile.
At that hour, most of the city was still asleep. But Cham was wide awake, ready for the day, full of quiet pride in his work. As we drove through the darkened streets, we began to chat, and slowly, his story unfolded.
A Father’s Love and Sacrifice
Cham is a father to a 16-year-old daughter. His wife has had to take work in another part of Cambodia, a difficult choice they made together, so their daughter can stay in school and receive every opportunity she deserves.
But Cham doesn’t dwell on the hardship. Instead, he speaks of his daughter with love and pride. She’s not only a diligent student, she gives back to her community by volunteering as a teacher for younger children when she’s not studying.
It’s a story of quiet resilience, of a family making sacrifices with grace and hope for a better future.
Three Days of Magic
What started as a single sunrise trip turned into three full days together.
Cham became more than just our driver he became our guide, our storyteller, and in many ways, the quiet heart of our Cambodian adventure. He didn’t just take us to the postcard-perfect temples. He showed us the spaces in between the ones most visitors miss. Hidden corners where the jungle has reclaimed the stone. Still, sacred places far from the crowds. Peaceful lakes. Dusty backroads. Whole villages where smiling kids waved and locals went about life, untouched by tourism.
Each day began early to beat the heat. And each day, Cham greeted us with his warm smile and a thoughtful gesture: bottles of icy cold water waiting in the tuk tuk, ready to revive us after hours of walking in the sun.
He didn’t just drive us he cared for us.
The Spirit of Slow Travel
People often ask me what slow travel means.
It’s not about ticking off sights or chasing sunsets, it’s about moments like this. It’s about meeting someone like Cham, whose story reminds you that kindness, sacrifice, and quiet resilience live in the everyday.
Cham didn’t try to impress us. He simply showed up on time, every time with integrity and warmth. He didn’t speak of struggle to gain sympathy, but rather of family and hope, with quiet strength. In his way, he embodied everything I’ve come to love about travel, that lingers, it’s not the landmarks that change you, it’s the people.
A Personal Recommendation
If you’re planning to visit Siem Reap and want a tuk tuk driver who will go above and beyond, I wholeheartedly recommend Cham.
He’s more than just a driver, he’s a good man, a devoted father, and a beautiful part of our Cambodian memories.

Final Thoughts
I may forget the names of some temples. I may lose track of which day we saw what.
But I’ll never forget Cham. His smile. His story. And how, for a few precious days in Cambodia, we felt truly seen, welcomed, and cared for.
