…a City That Celebrates Everyone

I’ve been fortunate to travel to some of the most iconic cities in the world, but only a few genuinely give back to the people who live there and the travellers they host. Singapore is one such place. With its world-class public transport, safe streets, immaculate gardens, and free outdoor light shows like Gardens by the Bay, Singapore is a shining example of a city that takes care of its residents while creating unforgettable experiences for visitors. From community fitness programs to neighbourhood festivals and subsidised housing, Singapore blends efficiency with compassion.

But then there’s Da Nang, Vietnam, a coastal city that quietly excels at looking after both its people and its guests. Known for its laid-back vibe and genuine hospitality, Da Nang has built a reputation not through glitz and glamour but through care, inclusivity, and community spirit. Wide, clean beaches are free for everyone to enjoy, public spaces are vibrant and well-maintained, and the city’s infrastructure, from its modern airport to its riverside walkways, is designed with both locals and travellers in mind. Along with affordable living, fresh street food, and easy access to cultural sites make Da Nang a comfortable home base for residents, while those visiting find it refreshingly accessible, safe, and welcoming.

However, over the past few months, that spirit has truly come alive. Da Nang has been buzzing with one incredible event after another, festivals that celebrate culture, creativity, and connection. The city hasn’t just been entertaining crowds; it’s been uplifting them. Locals and travellers alike have come together to share moments of joy, reflection, music, food, and fireworks. From spiritual gatherings to high-energy beach raves, Da Nang has shown exactly what can happen when a city puts people at the heart of everything it does.

A Warm Welcome: Vietnam–US Friendship Festival

On 22 June, Da Nang hosted the Vietnam-US Friendship Festival to mark 30 years of diplomatic relations. This wasn’t a stiff diplomatic ceremony tucked away in a government hall. It was a full-blown community celebration with traditional dance, music, food stalls and activities for all ages. Around 3,000 people showed up, locals and visitors alike.

U.S. Ambassador Marc Knapper summed it up well: “People-to-people engagement forms the foundation of the Vietnam–US relationship.” And Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations President Phan Anh Son added, “Put aside the past, overcome differences, promote similarities, and look to the future.”

Da Nang made this festival about connection, not politics. It was living proof that shared culture, not just shared history, brings people together.

Summer Comes Alive: Enjoy Da Nang Festival

From 19–23 June, the city pulled out all the stops for the Enjoy Da Nang Festival. This event turned the city into a beachfront playground, complete with music concerts, food fairs, sporting events and street performances. Over 20,000 people gathered to see top Vietnamese artists like Mono and DJ Peeka.

Vice Chairman Tran Chi Cuong called it a fantastic city full of sincerity, friendliness and hospitality, and you could feel it from the 500-strong yoga sessions at sunrise to the barefoot runners on the beach and the flash mobs lighting up the footpaths.

This wasn’t just a tourist event. Locals showed up in droves, proud of the celebration happening in their own backyard.

Art in the Air: Colours in the Sky

Held as part of the Enjoy Da Nang Festival, the Art Kite Performance was nothing short of magical. Taking place after dark, the skies above East Sea Park and Bach Dang walking street lit up with giant, glowing kites in vibrant neon colours fish, turtles, jellyfish, and fantastical creatures dancing in the night breeze. Thousands of locals made their way to the beach, not just to watch the spectacle overhead, but to spend time together families laying out mats, sharing snacks, and soaking up the festive atmosphere. It wasn’t just a performance; it was a celebration of community, colour, and connection. One man near me laughed and said, Best darn free show I’ve ever seen and honestly, I couldn’t have said it better.

Party on the Sand: Tiger Crystal Rave

Then came the Tiger Crystal Rave, held 7–8 June a beachside EDM extravaganza that could rival events in Singapore or even Sydney. But what made it special wasn’t just the production it was the inclusiveness.

No expensive VIP-only tickets. No exclusivity. Just great music, water cannons, light shows and an atmosphere where everyone was welcome to dance under the stars. Artists like Toc Tien and Kay Tran lit up the stage while the crowd locals, expats, and tourists moved as one.

It was Da Nang’s youth culture on full display: loud, proud, and open to everyone.

Sacred and Soulful: Vesak and the Worship of Buddha’s Relics

In contrast to the beach parties and neon lights, Da Nang also showed its spiritual side with celebrations like Vesak and the Worship of Buddha’s Relics during April and May. These deeply moving events involved processions, candlelit ceremonies, and the planting of 108 bodhi trees.

Tourists and locals alike gathered in temples and pagodas, where monks shared stories of enlightenment and peace. The atmosphere was one of quiet reverence a gentle reminder that in Da Nang, you can find both energy and stillness.

Lighting Up the Night: International Fireworks Festival (DIFF)

Finally, there was the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (DIFF), running every Saturday night from 31 May to 12 July. Ten countries competed in a stunning display of pyrotechnic storytelling along the Han River.

What sets DIFF apart is its accessibility. Yes, there are ticketed areas with fancy seating but there are also free viewing zones on bridges and riversides. Locals bring mats, families pack snacks, and visitors mingle with residents like old friends.

With themes like “Unity,” “Innovation” and “Sustainability,” each fireworks night was more than a show; it was a message.

How Da Nang Compares

Cities like Singapore, Tokyo, and Dubai are world-famous for their precision, innovation, and polished tourism experiences. They dazzle with skyline views, high-tech attractions, and carefully curated luxury. And while they absolutely excel in those areas, Da Nang offers something just as valuable but far less manufactured human connection.

Where some cities impress with spectacle, Da Nang charms with soul. You won’t find towering mega-malls or robotic service here; instead, you’ll stumble upon barefoot children chasing glowing kites along the beach, locals inviting you to sit and share a coffee, and monks chanting quietly under the flicker of lantern light.

It’s not a place built to impress; it’s a place built to include. While other cities may wow you with their grandeur, Da Nang gently wins you over with sincerity, warmth, and the kind of everyday moments that stay with you long after you’ve left. It’s not about being better, it’s about being real. And in today’s world, that’s something truly special.

Final Thoughts: A City That Gives Back

Da Nang isn’t just putting on a show, it’s creating something far deeper. These events aren’t just for entertainment, they’re for belonging. Whether you’re a local who’s lived here your whole life or a visitor just passing through, there’s this beautiful, open-armed feeling that says: you’re welcome here. And you believe it.

In a world overflowing with glossy tourist traps and bucket-list checklists, Da Nang is refreshingly real. It’s not about ticking off sights, it’s about moments. Moments that connect you to a place, to its people, and sometimes even to yourself.

That, for me, is what makes Da Nang truly special. It’s not just a city, I enjoy it’s a city I feel part of. And that makes all the difference.
