Rediscovering Bali: Then and Now

Rediscovering Bali: Then and Now

As I sit here reflecting on my journey over the past 18 months, I’m struck by the incredible transformation life has taken. Leaving behind the comfort of routine, selling everything, and stepping into the unknown has brought challenges, revelations, and profound experiences. From the serene beaches of Bali to the bustling streets of Vietnam and beyond, every destination has offered something unique. Yet, collectively, they’ve shaped a tapestry of memories, lessons, and personal growth.

Returning to Bali after a whirlwind adventure across Southeast Asia feels like reconnecting with an old friend. The Island of the Gods has always held a special place in my heart; its vibrant culture, warm people, and breathtaking beauty have drawn me back time and time again since my first visit in 1976. Yet, this trip brought a mix of nostalgia and change Bali remains captivating, but it also feels different, perhaps reflecting how the world and I have evolved over the years.

Legian, Sanur, and Tuban

This time, our exploration took us to three distinct areas Legian, Sanur, and Tuban each offering its personality and experience. Starting in Legian, a place I know well, we settled into a modest but familiar hotel near the beach. Its central location and simplicity suited us, serving as a comforting reintroduction to Bali’s rhythms. In Sanur, we tried something different, staying at a guesthouse that fell short of expectations but offered proximity to the beach and local attractions. Finally, Tuban provided a fitting finale to our stay with its resort-style hotel, friendly staff, spacious rooms, and a pool that felt like an oasis. These contrasts between places, from comfort to underwhelming moments, reflect the varied nature of travel itself an unpredictable journey where every stop teaches something new.

While Bali’s timeless allure remains, I couldn’t help but notice signs of change that seem to go beyond surface-level modernisation. The once-enthusiastic shopkeepers, who would call you into their stores at every step, are now often preoccupied with their phones. The traffic, always busy, has become an absolute gridlock at times, making even short trips challenging. And the beach sellers, once a symbol of entrepreneurial spirit, now often tug at your heartstrings with children in tow, seeking not just sales but sympathy. It feels like the island is navigating a delicate balance between its cultural heritage and the pressures of modern tourism.

Yet, amidst these observations, Bali still offers moments of magic. It’s in the laughter of a staff member welcoming you to breakfast, the tranquil sound of a waterfall beside a koi pond, or the satisfaction of witnessing everything fall into place even when delayed flights and international coordination could have gone awry. These instances remind me that travel isn’t just about destinations; it’s about connections, perspectives, and the memories we create along the way.

Reflection

Reflecting on the past year and a half, I’ve come to appreciate how much this journey has shaped my outlook on life. Living in Bali, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam has taught me the value of adaptability and the joy of discovering new rhythms in unfamiliar places. Travel, much like life, is a blend of the expected and the surprising, the beautiful and the challenging. It’s not always perfect, but the imperfections often carry the most profound lessons.

Despite the changes, Bali continues to hold its place as a sanctuary for reflection and renewal. Its evolving dynamics are a reminder that no destination stays the same, just as we are constantly evolving. While the Bali I knew years ago might feel different today, it remains a place that inspires exploration and gratitude. And for that, I will always hold it close to my heart, knowing that every visit adds a new chapter to an ever-expanding story of discovery.
