Yogi’s Paradise and Grill Bali Restaurant
Great Food, Even Better Friendships
Since my first trip to Bali way back in 1976, I’ve watched the island transform, and over the years, I’ve collected countless memories of this beautiful place. I started bringing my sons when they were barely a year old, and Bali became a second home for us—filled with familiar faces, favourite places, and, most importantly, lifelong friends. One of those friends is Yogi.
Many years ago, while strolling down Garlic Lane with the kids, looking for a place to eat, we were greeted by a young man with an infectious smile. He introduced himself as Yogi, yes, like the bear!
He was a young guy from Java who’d come to Bali with big dreams, working as a restaurant greeter. His enthusiasm was contagious, so naturally, we went inside for dinner. I can’t remember much about the food or even the restaurant itself, but I’ll never forget Yogi’s warm personality. From that moment, I knew we’d found a friend for life.
Fast forward a few years, and there he was, working in yet another restaurant, still greeting people with that same bright smile, his heart set on building something of his own. Yogi shared his dream with us to open his own place where he could cook for people, make them happy, and create a special corner of Bali where everyone felt at home.
Not long after, Yogi met his soulmate, Niken, whose love and encouragement took his dream to new heights. Together, they managed to move the restaurant to a prime spot on Legian Street, and it thrived. Yogi made sure each customer felt like family, and with Niken by his side and staff like the ever-reliable Louis, he created an experience that kept people coming back. Yogi wasn’t just running a restaurant; he was building a community.
But in classic Yogi fashion, he didn’t let that stop him. Rather than focusing on his losses, he began cooking for the community, feeding locals who were struggling, and keeping spirits high during one of the darkest times. Thanks to the generosity of Australian friends who sent support, Yogi not only kept his family afloat but also helped his staff and neighbours.
Today, in 2024, I found myself back in Bali and couldn’t imagine celebrating my birthday anywhere other than with Yogi and his family. He’s set up shop in a new location that’s a bit of a destination, but as always, it’s worth the journey. When I walked in, I was met with balloons, banners, and placemats in my favourite colour all organized by Yogi and Niken. The food was still fantastic, the service flawless, but it was the love and warmth that made the night unforgettable.
We filled the evening with margaritas, delicious food, birthday cake, and some spirited karaoke, all while Yogi and Niken ensured everyone felt welcome and cared for. I felt like I’d come home, wrapped in the generosity and kindness that Yogi and his family are known for. Yogis Paradise and Grill has become one of the most beloved spots in Bali, not through flashy ads or promotions, but through word of mouth, love, and the feeling that when you walk through those doors, you are family.
If you find yourself in Bali, make your way to Yogi’s. Let him know Sheridan sent you and prepare for an experience you won’t forget. This place is more than a restaurant; it’s a reminder of what happens when passion, community, and love come together. Here’s to Yogi, Niken, and the dream that keeps on growing; may it bring joy to many more people in the years to come.
